A San Antonio man is accused of secretly recording his relatives while they used a family bathroom.

Jose Maria Espinoza, 56, was arrested on Thursday and faces two charges of invasive visual recording. His bonds total US$130,000 (RM610,610).

San Antonio police say Espinoza allegedly recorded at least three family members, including a minor, with his smartphone while they used the bathroom in December 2022.

An arrest affidavit for Espinoza states that his stepdaughter found his cellphone in the bathroom while she was showering. When she noticed the phone was recording, she reported it to her mother.

When the mother confronted Espinoza, he admitted the phone was his and apologised to his stepdaughter, but would not give her the phone password to see the images and videos in his phone, according to the warrant.

Investigators obtained Espinoza's phone and found “many other images that appeared as though they were taken from a secreted location to photograph women in bathrooms and dressing rooms”, the warrant stated.

Investigators said it looked like Espinoza had created some of the images.

Police said Espinoza was arrested without incident. Bexar County Court records show no other prior charges against Espinoza. He currently remains in the Bexar County Jail. – The San Antonio Express-News/Tribune News Service
