YouTube will soon unveil a new feature inspired, once again, by the social network TikTok. From Nov 20, users will be able to enjoy a selection of videos in a feed called “For you”.

This feature is aimed at users, but only content creators will be able to activate it. In fact, YouTube will enable YouTubers to create a "For you" tab on the homepage of their channel, offering viewers a selection of their content. As such, viewers will see a selection of personalized content based on their individual viewing history, directly on the creator's channel.

Creators can personalise their selection by choosing from a range of content types, including videos, Shorts, livestreams and recent content published less than 12 months ago.

"The 'For you' section gives your audience a tailored experience when visiting your channel Home tab. This section surfaces a mix of personalized content based on what the individual viewer has watched. You can choose what types of content to show and select to show only content recently posted within the last 12 months," explains YouTube.

On TikTok, the "For You" feed offers an endless selection of videos chosen according to the user's preferences. It's a tool that has helped seal the Chinese social network's success, thanks to an algorithm that has been the subject of much attention. And this hasn't gone unnoticed by the video giant YouTube, which is only too aware of TikTok's rising status.

Indeed, this is not the first attempt by the American giant to resemble its Chinese competitor. The video platform previously launched Shorts, its short-form, vertical video format that's increasingly featured on the platform.

It's not surprising to see social platforms pulling out all the stops to attract and retain audiences, given that it is estimated that by 2023, people in the US will spend more time watching videos on apps than watching TV. – AFP Relaxnews
