REDWOOD CITY: A member of Redwood City’s fire department noticed a sexually explicit photo of a child on a computer screen while responding to a serious medical emergency, leading to the arrest of the elderly man who had needed help, according to authorities.

Fire personnel responded to the emergency around 7pm Tuesday on the 1400 block of Kentfield Avenue, police said. An apartment manager allowed responders to enter the unit of the 75-year-old man experiencing the emergency after there was no answer at his door.

While tending to the man, who was experiencing a serious, but not life-threatening medical issue according to police, a responder noticed the photo of the naked child on the computer. The responder reported what they saw to police.

Upon arrival, officers realised the man had a criminal history of sex crimes involving children. A search warrant was executed at the home and his electronics were seized, and more sexually explicit photos were found on those devices, police said.

The man was arrested after he was medically cleared. He was booked into San Mateo County Jail on suspicion of child pornography possession. — Bay Area News Group/Tribune News Service
