If you’re tired of being constantly disturbed by the beeping of your smartphone’s notifications, then bear in mind that these can be easily configured to make them less distracting. Here are a few tips to help take your mind off your phone.

Have you ever wondered how many times you look at your smartphone in a day? Studies have shown that this can exceed 100 times for adults, and more than double that for teenagers. Yet there are some relatively simple ways to help curb your addiction to notifications.

The first step is to go to your smartphone’s settings and select the list of applications authorised to send you notifications. As a general rule, select only the most essential ones, such as phone calls, messages or emails.

Don’t authorize all of them, otherwise you’ll quickly become overwhelmed with notifications beeping all day long, especially from social networks. More specifically, you can also configure the type of notification you want to receive on an application-by-application basis.

In addition, you can choose to allow notifications only between certain hours. To do this, go to “Do not disturb” on Android or “Focus mode” on iPhone. You're then free to set the hours during which you don't want to be bothered by any notifications.

And don't hesitate to switch your smartphone to airplane mode at night, as well as during meals or work meetings. This will allow you to disconnect and concentrate on other things without being distracted by new notifications.

Finally, regardless of the time of day, one very simple trick is to avoid keeping your phone next to you at all times. This will enable you to bypass certain notifications or simply the urge to pick up your smartphone. – AFP Relaxnews
