BERLIN: Who doesn't know the story of Pinocchio, the wooden puppet that comes to life and whose nose grows when he lies? But you haven't seen him like this yet.

The PC and console game Lies of P takes up the familiar fairy tale, albeit not in a way that’s suitable for children.

Players slip into the role of Pinocchio, whom a mysterious voice leads to a gloomy steampunk city ruled by sinister and hostile puppets, some of them several metres tall. They have killed their creators and taken control of the city.

In his search for his creator Gepetto, Pinocchio's trump card is lying. While the other puppets can only tell the truth, untruth is his specialty.

As the game progresses, you are often faced with the choice of whether to tell the truth or an advantageous lie. Your decision has an impact on the story and can also have negative consequences for the wooden hero.

Speedy dodging is the order of the day in combat. You can rarely afford to make mistakes against your enemies, who weigh tons and can quickly finish you off. Pinocchio also has a mechanical arm full of menacing abilities, which can be upgraded over time.

What Lies of P has done with the classic wooden puppet may seem crazy at first glance, but with a dark setting and challenging battles, the implementation is quite successful.

The game is available for PCs, the PlayStation 4 and 5 as well as the Xbox One and Series X/S for around €60/US$60 (RM254). – dpa
