The Communications Ministry has issued an alert urging members of the public to beware of a new phone scam tactic.

In a Facebook post today (Jan 9), the ministry said certain individuals are making fraudulent phone calls while claiming to be from the Communications Ministry.

The ministry reminds members of the public to verify the identity of the caller before providing any information.

The public are also urged to make a police report or contact the National Scam Response Centre at 997 within 24 hours if they suspect any fraudulent activity.

Some users on an Internet forum have posted about their experiences dealing with phone calls from individuals claiming to be from the Communications Ministry.

In a posting last month, one user alleged that the caller said his number will be blocked by the ministry and urged them to provide some personal details for further action.

Phone calls from individuals claiming to be from the ministry have previously been used as a modus operandi by scammers.

Back in 2022, the then-Communications and Digital ministry issued a statement stating that it had not made phone calls to any individuals claiming that they face police action due to involvement in a criminal activity. It added that it was a phone scam tactic.

In an effort to protect users from scammers, the Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) through cooperation with NSRC said in a report that it has blocked 2.6 billion suspected scam calls as of September last year.

The agency also took action to terminate phone numbers that were involved in suspicious activities and blocked websites related to phishing scams.
