WhatsApp is now rolling out the ability to create events in group chats, allowing users to schedule both in-person and virtual gatherings via the messaging app.

To create an event, go to a group chat and, in the type a new message field, tap on the add an attachment icon (shaped like a paperclip in Android and a “+” sign on iOS). Select the “Events” option, then name the event and add an optional description, after which users can set the date, time, and location for the event, and even create a WhatsApp call link for the event if needed.

The feature was originally announced for Communities and Announcement groups back in May and is now making its way to regular group chats.

In the original blogpost covering the feature, the messaging app wrote: “With events it’s now easier for people to plan their get-togethers directly in WhatsApp, whether it’s setting up a virtual meeting or birthday dinner.”

“Anyone can create an event and others can respond so the whole group knows who is coming,” it said. “Guests can also find the event in the group’s information page, and those going will get an automatic notification when it’s getting close.

“Events are coming to groups that belong to a Community first, and will roll out to all groups over the coming months.”
