YouTube has finally decided to increase the length of its Shorts. Users will now be able to publish videos of up to three minutes. A step forward for the platform, which is still lagging far behind its competitors when it comes to this format.

Users will just have to wait a little longer. The three-minute video format will not be available until October 15, YouTube announced on its blog.

The new duration will be available for videos in square and vertical formats.

The American giant has clearly signaled its intention to highlight YouTube Short content and improve its recommendations over the coming months.

This announcement comes long after TikTok upped the duration of such content. Since 2021, the Chinese social network has been offering three-minute videos, now extending to ten minutes. Some users have even already been able to test 60-minute videos. Ironically, while YouTube is following in TikTok's footsteps in this area, the latter also seem determined to compete with the American giant on its own turf.

Another enhancement is the ability to search for content directly on the platform to create a Shorts video: "In the coming months, you'll be able to tap into the vast universe of YouTube content directly from your Shorts camera, making it easier to remix clips from your favorite videos, music videos, and more. You'll even be able to pull from multiple clips across YouTube,” says the platform.
