BERLIN: Until now, Signal's advantage over WhatsApp has largely been one of data protection, given the messenger's long-standing reputation as the most privacy-oriented chat app.

But Signal is now also offering a tidier interface for those of us overwhelmed with lots of different chats, which can now be tidied up into folders, a simple but effective organisational improvement, the Signal Foundation has announced.

A wide variety of folders can then be created and categorised – for example Friends, Family or Work, and chats can then be freely added. There are also three standard folders suggested by Signal: one for individual chats, one for group chats and one for unread messages from all chats.

The new feature must be activated in the settings under "Chats/Chat folders". The new feature is initially only available for Android (app version 7.22), but will also be available for iOS.

However, there are now also more organisational options for iPhone users: the filter function for unread messages, which was previously only available for Android, is now available for them (from iOS app version 7.36).

The filter works like this: If you drag the chat list downwards, only chats with unread messages are automatically displayed. The feature will reportedly also be integrated into the desktop version at a later date. The program's start-up and storage speed is said to have been improved. – dpa
