Bluesky isn't the only platform taking advantage of the account closures on X that have been multiplying since Donald Trump's election. Some former users have turned to Meta's platform, Threads. In fact, since the beginning of November, 35 million new users have signed up.
Since November 1, Threads – the Meta Group's platform designed to compete with X (formerly Twitter) – has welcomed 35 million new users. This rapid growth can be explained in part by the departure of users from the X platform, owned by Elon Musk.
The victory of Donald Trump, whose candidacy in the US presidential election was supported by the tech magnate, prompted many X users to jump ship. The reasons given were manifold: outright racism, constant misogyny, misinformation and conspiracy theories, and online hate and bullying.
Many internet users turned to Bluesky, the social network created by Twitter co-founder and former CEO, Jack Dorsey. Since November 5, Bluesky has seen its community grow significantly, now exceeding 20 million users.
Although Bluesky, which closely resembles Twitter, is enjoying growing success in many countries, Threads has not said its last word. Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri revealed on November 14 that over 15 million new accounts have been created since the beginning of the month. Axios reports that a further 20 million users have joined in the last 11 days. According to Meta spokesperson Andy Stone, this trend has been observed for the past three months, with one million people signing up every day.
According to the latest official statement from Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg, Threads had over 275 million monthly active users as of October 31. In July, after a year's existence, the platform counted 175 million of them.
As for X, the state of play is less clear-cut. Elon Musk has decided not to divulge official figures on a regular basis, but according to X executives, the platform boasts over 570 million monthly active users worldwide. – AFP Relaxnews
