PETALING JAYA: A reminder for users to renew their MyDigital ID digital certification every year has prompted backlash among netizens on social media.
"Some of you might not know that digital certificates need to be renewed every year from the date of registration, right? Don’t panic, it’s not hard at all! (Mesti ada yang tak tahu yang sijil digital perlu renew setiap satu tahun dari tarikh pendaftaran kan? Jangan panik, tak susah pun!)" MyDigital ID said in a post on Facebook on Dec 4.
In the comments section, users asked MyDigital ID to explain the relevance of renewing their digital certification yearly, with one suggesting that it may be better to remind users to renew if they have lost their devices.
Meanwhile on X (formerly known as Twitter), other users have said the requirement to renew the MyDigital ID yearly is troublesome for the public, with one user claiming that it's "one of the worst initiatives so far".
MyDigital ID said users will be reminded to renew their digital identification within 90 days of the expiry date through a prompt on the app.
If they fail to do so after the 90-day reminder period, they will have to re-register through the app or at a nearby kiosk.
MyDigital ID is a national digital identification management system, designed to authenticate users for online transactions and allowing them to access government services with a single ID.
The initiative implemented by Mimos under the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry, was first announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in November last year.
In his Budget 2025 speech, Anwar has said that digital transformation will be "centred on MyDigital ID", adding that the government will continue to enhance its functionality and user experience.
Last week, it was reported that Anwar expressed frustrations over the slow progress of the MyDigital rollout which has so far recorded only 1.319 million registration as of Dec 5.
