Meta will soon be rolling out a whole range of intelligent tools to stimulate the creativity and engagement of its three billion Facebook and Instagram users. The idea is to provide these users with fast, efficient solutions for putting content online, as well as profiles generated entirely by artificial intelligence.

Meta's aim is to win over a younger audience and give the platforms a new dynamic.

Meta is banking on AI to boost user engagement on Facebook and Instagram. The company is planning to introduce virtual accounts for “AI characters” on its platforms, with photos, biographies and content generated entirely by AI.

Interviewed by the Financial Times, Connor Hayes, Meta's vice president in charge of AI, explains that the aim is to make these profiles as dynamic as real users in the years to come.

Their role will be to bring a shot of creative energy to the social media networks, appealing to a younger audience and thus helping Meta better compete with TikTok and Snapchat in regards to this demographic.

To achieve this, Meta will be rolling out tools for generating AI characters. Already being tested in the United States, the avatar creation tool has generated hundreds of thousands of characters, mostly for private use.

At the same time, other image generation tools will be introduced, in addition to a text-based video generation system, such OpenAI's Sora or Google's Veo 2. And if that's not enough, Meta also intends to offer the possibility of creating intelligent assistants to answer followers' questions in the near future.

The challenge is for this content to bring fresh entertainment formats and be as creative as possible, without, however, one day becoming so common that it saturates the platform and detracts from the overall quality of the content being shared – a real risk.

Another risk with this type of approach comes in the form of countless ethical issues, starting with misinformation. In order to minimise the risk of misuse, Meta is committed to ensuring that all AI-generated content is clearly labeled and easy to identify.

While it may raise some eyebrows, the initiative is definitely in line with the strategies of social media companies globally. Recently, X integrated Grok, its image generator. Snapchat and TikTok, meanwhile, already have tools for generating images and videos. – AFP Relaxnews
