Your playlist says a lot about who you are, but did you know that it could speak volumes about your video game preferences? A recent study by Luminate reveals that gaming enthusiasts not only listen to more music than the average person, but they also favor certain specific musical genres. Rock and hip-hop are the top genres among gamers, and these tastes align with distinct gaming styles.

For example, rock fans have a marked affinity for shooting games. According to the Luminate Research study on the US population, 22% of rock fans play FPS (First-Person Shooter) games like Counter-Strike, compared to 16% of the general population. Choppy rhythms, electric guitars and lively riffs seem to resonate with the intensity of online combat.

If you prefer hip-hop, there's a good chance you're a fan of action-adventure games. In fact, 27% of fans of this musical genre play these kinds of video games (compared to 15% of the general population).

Meanwhile, pop music fans have a predilection for puzzle games. Some 30% of them play puzzle games such as Tetris or Candy Crush, compared to 19% of the general population. The catchy and driving rhythms of pop music seems to harmonize with the logic and strategy challenges offered by these games.

EDM (Electronic Dance Music) fans are true virtual adventurers, since 37% of them play RPGs (Role-Playing Games), three times more than the general average (12%).

For gamers, the headline act is clearly rock, which stands out as the top genre for 52% of them, compared to 41% of the general population. Hip-hop/rap, in second place, is popular with 40% of gamers, compared to 28% of the general population. Country music (34% vs. 29%), R&B (34% vs. 27%) and Pop music (34% vs. 25%) share third place.

In comparison, the research states that: "According to Luminate’s 2024 Year-End Report, R&B/Hip-Hop, Rock and Pop are the top three core genres in the US based on ranked streaming volume. Country and Latin follow in fourth and fifth place, respectively." – AFP Relaxnews
