Unisem's Q3 profit soars with the stronger US dollar

Apart from the higher revenue and lower interest expense, Unisem's profit also improved due to better contribution from its wafer bumping and advanced package operations. Photo shows the chip assembly operation.

KUALA LUMPUR: Unisem (M) Bhd boosted its earnings for the third quarter (Q3) ended Sept 30, 2015, by 48.2% to RM40.2mil from a year earlier, thanks mainly to a higher revenue as a result of the stronger US dollar.

The semiconductor assembly firm grew its revenue 20.6% year on year to RM329.6mil. At the same time, it halved its interest expense to RM1.4mil, which also contributed to the better profit.

For the nine-month period to Sept 30, earnings doubled to RM95.1mil on a 20.7% jump in revenue to RM908.5mil.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia on Thursday, Unisem said the increase in revenue for Q3 and financial year to date (YTD) was mainly due to consistent demand for the group’s products and services and the stronger greenback versus the ringgit and yuan.

“The improvement in net profit for the current quarter and financial YTD was due to increased revenue, better contribution from our wafer bumping and advanced package operations and lower interest expense,” it said.

About 43% of the chipmaker’s revenue for the nine months came from customers in the United States, slightly more than the contribution from customers in Asia (41.5%).

Unisem’s directors are proposing a second interim dividend of 6% (or 3.0 sen per share) for the financial period ended Sept 30, to be paid on Dec 15.

Unisem shares gained 3 sen to close at RM2.30 on Thursday.
