IT IS commonly assumed that the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur heralded the boom of sports infrastructure in our country, but the truth is it that it dates to well before that.
It could be said that the first major sports facility in the city was built back in the 1950s, when Stadium Merdeka first opened its doors in August 1957, to commemorate Malaysia's independence.
