Nicol gives Wee Wern pairing a thumbs up ahead of CWG

KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 1 Nicol David is happy to have national No. 2 Low Wee Wern as her doubles partner for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow from July 23-Aug 3.

The 30-year-old Nicol is the defending singles gold medallist at the Games.

The Penangite, however, has never won a medal in the women’s doubles, although she has a silver and a bronze in mixed doubles with Ong Beng Hee in 2006 and 2010 respectively.

And Nicol, fresh from leading the Malaysian women to a record eighth title at the Asian Team Championships in Hong Kong on Sunday, is ready to partner world No. 7 Wee Wern for the first time.

“I’m fine with Wee Wern. She has improved a lot and will be a good match. She is a fierce competitor, so I’m sure we’ll work out well,” said Nicol, the seven-time world champion and winner of five British Open crowns.

Nicol believes the Tri-Nation Squash Doubles tournament organised by the Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) will give them a chance to gauge the other players featuring in the Games.

India and New Zealand are the other countries participating in the test event that is held at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil. The tournament ends on Wednesday.

“I don’t play doubles that often and the format always changes, so it’s good to have a test event like this to familiarise myself with the new rules,” said Nicol.

“Although we have a packed schedule, it’s not too hectic for me because there is really no best time to have an event like this.

“It’s all about adapting and adjusting. I’m happy to have the chance to have some competition feel and see how the other teams are shaping up,” added Nicol.

Besides Nicol-Wee Wern, SRAM are also sending a men’s pair – Beng Hee-Ivan Yuen – and a mixed pair – Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan-Delia Arnold – to the Games.
