KUALA LUMPUR: National No. 2 squash player Low Wee Wern has improved her ranking, moving up two rungs to No. 6 in the world in January.
It is the former three-time Asian junior champion’s best-ever ranking since she turned pro in 2007.
The 23-year-old Wee Wern is now the second highest ranked Asian player in the world after compatriot Nicol David, who has been ranked world No. 1 since August, 2006.
Wee Wern, who is coached by Aaron Soyza in Penang, was thrilled to be ranked No. 6 although she failed to win a single Women’s Squash Association (WSA) title last year.
“I managed to collect some valuable rankings points last year after creating a few upsets by beating the top five world ranked players in tournaments,” said Wee Wern.
“I will continue to train harder to further improve my game. I am on the right track to achieve my mission of breaking into the top five by the end of this year,” she added.
Wee Wern will start her season at the Tournament of Champions in New York from Jan 20-24.
She is seeded eighth and will open her campaign against Latasha Khan of the United States in the first round. Wee Wern, however, will face a tough task in the quarter-finals as she is down to meet seven-time world champion Nicol.
Wee Wern will also compete in two other tournaments – the Greenwich Open (Jan 24-27) and Cleveland Classic (Feb 1- 4) – in the US.
