Kampung Baru residents are unhappy over a river reserve being used as a commercial carpark.
The Sungai Keroh reserve land next to Jalan Api-Api 1 in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur has been converted into an open air carpark to serve customers at a neighbouring food court.
Kepong Community Service Centre head Yee Poh Ping highlighted the issue during a press conference held at the site, yesterday.
He said the land was supposed to be a green lung.
“After the parking lot was built, the drainage connecting to the river has become narrower and this might affect water flow.
“We are also concerned about the safety of motorists as the spot is located at a junction,” he said.
Several complaints were made to Drainage and Irrigation Department, last year, but no action has been taken.
He urged the authorities to demolish the carpark and maintain the area as a green space.
“We are not against the Government providing parking space for the community but the current carpark operators charge customers RM2 for every four hours.
“A green lung should never be used for commercial purposes.
“We will lodge a complaint to Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission if no action is taken to convert the carpark back into a green space,” he said
