PETALING JAYA: The viral news claiming that Malaysia will experience a heatwave over the next five days is not true.

Malaysian Meteorological Department director-general Alui Bahari refuted the viral news, saying that the sun is not above the equator.

He also refuted the claim that the temperature would rise to 40 degrees Celsius.

"The highest temperature recorded last week was 36 degrees Celsius, and we have not reached the heatwave temperature of 37 degrees Celsius," Alui Bahari said in a statement on Monday (Oct 23).

He added that storms hit several locations across Peninsular Malaysia on Monday afternoon due to the effects of the weakening typhoon Lan.

"The storm on Monday afternoon is normal as the country is experiencing a shift towards the monsoon season," he said.
