Woman who died swimming at Semporna resort believed to have had a heart attack


KOTA KINABALU: A Malaysian guest of an island resort in Semporna has died from suspected heart attack after snorkeling at the beach there on Tuesday (May 2).

Semporna district police chief Superintendent Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah confirmed this following a 38-second clip being circulated in social media earlier during the day.

"It was reported that around 4.15pm, the 53-year-old woman from Selangor who was on vacation with a friend, suffered from breathing difficulties when conducting the activity at the island’s beach.

"Following the complications, the victim was brought to land and resuscitation efforts was made by the resort staff when she passed out, before she was brought to the Semporna district hospital.

"The victim was pronounced dead by the hospital medical officer, believed to be due to a heart attack," said Mohd Farhan in a statement.

He said an autopsy will be conducted to further determine cause of death, but no criminal elements was detected and the case has been classified as a sudden death report (SDR).
