KOTA KINABALU: Sports medicine congress marks a historic milestone for sports science and medicine in Malaysia and all of Asia, says Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
The wife of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this when launching the 18th Asian Federation of Sports Medicine Congress (AFSM) and the 8th Institut Sukan Negara Sports Medicine and Sports Science Conference here on Saturday (April 27).
“This collaborative effort between AFSM, the Malaysian Association of Sports Medicine, and Institut Sukan Negara is a testament to their dedication.
“This exciting global platform enables efforts to shape the future as it brings together leading minds to exchange groundbreaking ideas, share innovative findings, and push the boundaries of sports and exercise science as well as medicine,” she said in her speech.
Around 500 delegates from across Asia convened at the Sabah International Convention Centre for the two-day conference, which aims to reshape the sports development landscape and aspires to catalyse change in related fields.
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh also highlighted the event's significance, saying it provides a platform for tracking sports science development in Malaysia.
She said, “This event provides a platform not only for the national sports institute but also for universities to showcase their work.”
Meanwhile, AFSM president Professor Dr Minhao Xie described the congress as Asia's highest-level and largest academic activity for sports medicine.
“I believe that the congress will help promote the development of Asian sports medicine and raise people's awareness of the latest developments in the field,” he said.
Congress organising chairman Dr Chan Kin Yuen said: “This is the first time the AFSM Congress has organised two pre-congress webinars to maximise the learning opportunities before practical workshops on the conference days.
"There will also be awards for the best young researcher for oral and poster presentations”.
