Motorcyclist dies after ramming into truck parked on main road

KOTA KINABALU: A stranded truck parked on a main road in Tawau has claimed the life of a motorcyclist who rammed into it early Friday (Dec 19).

In the 4.30am mishap, a 32-year-old man was riding his motorcycle heading to work when he hit the back of the truck and was thrown to the side of the Sungai Burung road, resulting in serious injuries.

The road was dark, and there were no signs to alert road users of the parked vehicle in the left lane.

Medical officers on site pronounced the victim dead at the scene and his body was taken to the hospital for a post-mortem.

Tawau OCPD Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin said initial investigations found that the truck driver had parked the vehicle there after its engine failed at around 10.30pm Wednesday (Dec 17).

“It was not left parked there and not removed from the main road for two days,” he said, adding that the 46-year-old truck driver has been remanded to facilitate investigations.

He said the case is being investigated under the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving.

ACP Jasmin reminded road users to be responsible and alert on the road, and to move their cars to the side that does not block moving traffic, and to put up warning signs to alert other users of their presence to prevent accidents.
