Logging out water resources

WE refer to the report “Logging out a forest reserve” (The Star, May 16). Spanning an area of 160,000ha, the greater Ulu Muda forests comprise the Ulu Muda, Pedu, Padang Terap, Bukit Keramat, Chabar Besar, Chabar Kecil and Bukit Saiong forest reserves in the eastern part of Kedah.

This whole area has long been identified and served as water catchments for the Muda and Pedu dams, which supply water for irrigation in the Muda scheme (rice bowl of the nation), domestic consumption in Kedah, Perlis and Langkawi, and for industrial needs in Seberang Perai and Penang.
